An Antique Khotan Rug Samarkand Design with Layered Detail and Cultural Influence
This remarkable antique Khotan rug, handwoven in East Turkestan approximately 80–100 years ago, showcases the region’s signature blend of Central Asian and Chinese design elements. Also known as Samarkand Vase Design, this antique Khotan features a deep color palette and intricate detailing for visual richness and refined structure. Its elongated format and complex composition make it ideal for spaces where both function and artistry are essential.
Design & Composition
The field is defined by a deep red ground, populated by a series of elaborately patterned vases. Each varies in scale and decoration, contributing to a dynamic yet balanced composition. From these vessels, finely rendered plants and flowers emerge, adding depth and narrative to the design.
The border structure is particularly distinctive: a narrow golden yellow band introduces warmth, while a wider outer border features stylized Chinese-inspired motifs, adding rhythm and cultural depth.
Together, these elements create a layered composition that feels both ornamental and intentional.
